  2. nice guide thanks a lot…can you please do guide how to make dual boot fedora 17 alongside windows 7 using LVM and non-LVM partition…sorry for my english. your reply is much appreciated.

  3. I did a simple partition with Windows 7 Utlimate on the same drive and it worked for dual boot without any problem.

    • did u tell me or explain me how to install linux with existing windows 7. just like u install plzzzz help me how to install it

      • Hi nitin,

If you do not have unpartitioned free space, then I recommend you to shrink your Windows 7 partition (on Windows) as small as you want. And then install Fedora 17 example using “Use free space” method.

    • how did you do it

  4. Hi i tried the steps mentioned by you and the installation process is successful upto 2.14, but after rebooting everytime i am presented with the screen do you want to install on harddrive. I am using virtualbox 4.1.16. Please let me know the virtualbox verion you used.

    • Hi Dinesh,

Did you removed your installation media?

      I used also VirtualBox 4.1.16 and real computer… :)

  5. Thanks for the guide.
    Very helpful.

  6. HI Jr,
I was installing fedora 17 on virtualbox and i was keeping the iso image at the same location as at the time of installation. It seems some bug in virtualbox it shouldn’t ask for installation when installation has already been done.

I tried your solution by moving the virtual disk iso file to a different location and then it worked fine. I found this behavior pretty strange.

    Thanks for your help.

You can’t move the iso file when the virtualbox is running so you need to save the virtual machine and close the virtualbox and then move the iso file and start the VM.

    • Hi again Dinesh,

Actually VirtualBox works normally, because installation should start again if you have CD (iso image) on drive and you do not change boot order. Despite the fact that if the system has been installed or not. This works exactly same way on real computers. :)

You are welcome! It’s good to hear that you got it working! :)

  7. hi..
i tried to install fedora 17 on my pc along with windows7 by creating free space. Everything was ok untill “copying live image to hard drive” , after that it showed “error in istalling boot ladder”, “installation is complete but system may not be bootable”

  10. I have tried for three days to successfully install fedora 17 on virtualbox. When I use the live CD it only shows a black screen. When I use the full DVD it hangs on the keyboard selection screen. I am not sure what I am doing wrong.

    • Hi,

Could you tell specs about your VirtualBox virtual machine?

  11. Hi. I had an hp tm2 tablet with Windows 7 and wanted to put F 17 on it in dual boot.
Following this method of installation from a USB I goofed up….

At step 2.9: Select Installation Type

… instead of “create custom partition” layout I selected “use all space”!!!
I also said yes to “Write changes to disk”.

I realised the mistake in a few seconds and turned off the laptop.

Now it has no OS & the usb live boot of F 17 shows the whole hard drive to be ext4.

Please advise if there is a way to recover from this?

    • Hi Samir,

Do you have any backups from your system? Did you have some valuable data on your disk?

Maybe you could recover your Windows without data using recovery discs. If you some valuable data missing, then it might be possible to recover your overwritten data, but you might need some real data recovery specialist help. It’s possible to try to use some recovery tool from Internet, but if you have very valuable data then it still might be better to contact data recovery specialist.

  12. i have a one problem 1) i use the custom layout 2)i select the free space drive i.e f 3)cutomize now 4) select all packages 5)but all packages install than error=> system may not be bootable.
