This is guide, howto install Skype 4.1 on Fedora 18/17/16/15/14 and Skype 4.0 on CentOS/Red Hat (RHEL)/Scientific Linux (SL) 6.3/6.2/6.1/6. This is actually easy process, but I won’t use Skype own RPM package, which works only with Fedora 16+. Skype package also doesn’t care about any needed dependencies on 64-bit (x86_64) systems nor 32-bit (i686) systems. This guide uses Skype dynamic package (for Fedora) and static package (for CentOS/Red Hat (RHEL)/Scientific Linux (SL) 6.3/6.2/6.1/6) and all dependencies are installed manually.
1. Install Skype 4.1 on Fedora 18/17/16/15 and Skype 4.0 on CentOS/Red Hat (RHEL) 6.3/6.2/6.1/6
1.3 Download Skype 4.1 Dynamic or Skype 4.0 Static Package
cd/tmp
## Skype 4.1 Dynamic for Fedora ##wget--trust-server-names http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-linux-dynamic
## Skype 4.0 Static for CentOS / Red Hat (RHEL) / Scientific Linux (SL) ##wget http://download.skype.com/linux/skype_static-4.0.0.8.tar.bz2
1.4 Extract Skype
mkdir/opt/skype
## Extract Skype 4.1 on Fedora ##tar xvf skype-4.1*-C/opt/skype --strip-components=1## Extract Skype 4.0 on CentOS / Red Hat (RHEL) / Scientific Linux (SL) ##tar xvf skype_static*-C/opt/skype --strip-components=1
1.5 Create libtiff.so.4 link on CentOS / Red Hat (RHEL) / Scientific Linux (SL)
I use F16 and had the F13+ version installed but since a few days it refused to connect anymore.
Following your guide solved my problem!
One thing: after uninstalling the other one, i just removed the directory ~/.Skype, but in the new one the sounds didn’t work. I found out it looked for them in /usr/share/skype (perhaps from the old install?) so i just copied there the directories “lang” and “sounds” and fixed the problem quickly.
Otherwise, I can confirm that everything (chat, call, video) works well on Fedora 16 X86_64.
Keep up the good work and looking forward to discover your other guides!
Hi Radu and thank you very much your feedback, I really appreciate! :)
Just updated guide and you are totally right that sounds not working, because Skype try to find those under /usr/share/skype. I just added my solution to this problem and replaced all copies with symlinks. ;)
Now if you update Skype later to newer version and use symlinks then you could just replace whole /opt/skype directory and everything should work smoothly…personally I like install all “external” packages under /opt directory, because /opt directory is reserved for all the software and add-on packages that are not part of the default installation.
Thanks again Radu for your input and your help to make this guide better!
Indeed the symlink solution is the best, I updated my setup.
Also, this is really not important, but the application icon (the green one) is not rendered correctly (it is not transparent and has some strange pixels), no ideea why. screenshot
Tried updating the gnome icoan cache but still the same.
I actually see exactly same problem with Fedora 16 and Skype icon. Just tested this with CentOS 6.2 and icon is working perfectly with Gnome 2. It’s really hard to say why this icon looks so ugly on Fedora 16 Gnome 3.2 (and maybe on Fedora 15 Gnome 3). This problem is probably fixed in RPM package but not in static package.
Btw. I just noticed one nice thing when I try to fix this icon problem. Skype actually have –resources parameter, so actually it’s more elegant use /opt/skype as resources directory. So I updated guide once again…symlink setup is working nicely, but it’s even more simple setup use resources parameter and /usr/share/skype directory is not needed at all… ;)
So if you want use this setup then remove /usr/share/skype:
I have installed it many times on fedora16 [because ive tried gnome kde lxde and xfc then back to gnome which im getting used to now] just by downloading the rpm from skype then just installing the 32bit packages with no problems
PLEASE HELP ME!!! i have a bord video call for work in two days and my computer crashed. so fedora was the only OS i could find, so i dont know how any of this linux stuff works.. if someone would please just post every single step and how to do those steps i would GREATLY appreciate it!!! hope to hear from someone soon!!!
I have f16 installed and installed skype via the rpm. On 64 bit machine the needed libs weren’t installed and the computer refused to boot due to soft-lock error. I knew the problem was with skype but wasn’t sure eactly what was the problem. Your tut fixed me up. I appreciate your work!!
Awesome, it worked. I had to follow it twice and rely on some user comments as I had skype installed before, but the sound did not work.
I am on Centos 6.2 64 bits over a Dell E6420. The default sound devices picked up by the OS are named ‘PulseAudio server’, and all three (microphone, speakers, ringing) have defaulted to this option after the skype re-install. However, it’s not perfect, the sound quality is awful – cracked, distorted and with echo 1 second later. Nevertheless, it feels like progress because before I had no sound at all, and echo-test calls resulted in error messages displaying ‘problem with audio device’. Now, thanks to JR’s detailed instructions, the audio works – poor quality – but works.
I should add that before the skype reinstall, I had a dropdown menu under each audio component at options->sound devices. I can’t recall what the options were, but I had a list with 5 or 6.
After the reinstall this menu only has one option, “PulseAudio server (local)”.
Very good tutorial. But I got something wrong after installing and running skype :
$ skype
skype: error while loading shared libraries: libtiff.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I found in my system /usr/lib/libtiff.so.3 instead and nothing about libtiff.so.4
I simply create a symlink and everything work :
ln -s /usr/lib/libtiff.so.3 /usr/lib/libtiff.so.4
Guyrodge & JR – just installed on Fedora 17 following these instructions. I had to change in (1.4) skype_static* to getskype-linux-beta-static*. Also when I launched skype it gave me an error about the libtiff.so.4 file. Following guyrodge’s advice everything works like a charm. Thanx everyone
It was the first time I installed something under linux – great utorial and helped. Had the same problem with the libtiff so. 4 I cc/paste the symlink and it works perfectly well.
But what does this symlink do please ?
Heyyyyyyyy
Thanks for this beautifull tutorial!
Everything is really working now.
I had the same problem as “guyrodge” (The last comment) and did the same solution and now everything works! thanks guyrodge …:)
i am using fedora 14 & i install skype with this tutorial
i am not able to start the application by using skype command.
eventhough on cliking skype icon.
thanks JR for reply
i do not get any error when i start it using skype command.
it simply like this.(skype do not open.)
[root@mahesh mahesh]# skype
[root@mahesh mahesh]#
thank you, now i´ve got working skype
but i´m a bit lazy and have installed only dependencies from your example and after that downloaded and installed skype.rpm for fedora file from skype.com
and it´s worked!
P.S. yum showed errors on glibc2.i686, so i´ve had to remove it from the my dependencies list.
Thanks to the suggestions I was able to get Skype calls running. After several systems updates, however, calls do not work any more (including test calls). Under Options (from the icon) I can show that my UVS Camera is working (confirmed also by the control light on the camera). No such control light comes on during a test call and no sound is recorded. I repeated the installation several times. Where may I be going wrong?
With so many repeat installations I changed the shell script skype to:
$ cat /usr/bin/skype
# 6/14/2012 WRJ
#!/bin/sh
if test ! -f /usr/lib/libtiff.so.4
then
echo need to link /usr/lib/libtiff.so.4
su -c “ln -s /usr/lib/libtiff.so.3 /usr/lib/libtiff.so.4″

export SKYPE_HOME=”/opt/skype”

Just in case anyone ask, alternative for tar xvf skype_static* -C /opt/skype --strip-components=1
is tar xvf getskype-linux-beta-static -C /opt/skype --strip-components=1
Hi JR,
Nice tuto but I wonder if it will work for me. I still got the 2.2 beta version runing on f16 32bits. Do I have to remove it peviously, right? If I wanted to upgrade to the 4.0.0.8 Skype version?. If so, how can I do it to correctly from command line? Could you pls help me? I would appreciate it so much..

Hi JR,
Could yoy help me, pls?
I cannot run “tar xvf skype_static* -C /opt/skype –strip-components=1″
I’m on fedora 17. As it’s a new installation I got as “tar” it’s not installed so after googling I run “# yum install per-Archive-Tar (source:http://pkgs.org/fedora-17/fedora-updates-i386/perl-Archive-Tar-1.76-212.fc17.noarch.rpm.html). Now I got tar.i686 2:1.26-7.fc17 (I dunno if it was correct(¿?)).
As I still could not do it, I run “#yum install tar”. Now I got “tar.i686 2:1.26-7.fc17″, and what I got now is:
“tar: skype_static*: Can’t open: file or dir doesn’t exist
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now”
I’d appreciate any clue on this issue.
Thanks.
Looks like you have tar installed now. One thing is changed on Skype download and I updated this guide too, so download Skype with following command to get right filename:
Hi, Thanks JR.
This time I could install it but I got issues. When start skype from cli I got this report:
“$ skype

any help?
Good to hear that you got Skype installed, did you installed all dependencies on step 1.2?

I installed skype following these instructions. I can get the sound but no video. Under Video Devices (Select webcam) it says “No devices found”. I am using fedora 16 64 bit. Please help. Thanks.
Mike
Thanks. Yes, there was a problem with the webcam. A friend of mine suggested that I update fedora and reinstall skype. Everything works now. Thanks.
Mike
At step 1.2, i was getting error for few packages. So instead of updating whole system with yum update, i just updated the packages for which i was getting error and it did work. Thanks :)
You are welcome and nice to hear that you got Skype working! And yes 32-bit libraries are needed on 64-bit systems because there is no 64-bit Skype available.
You can use example nano or vi/vim editor to edit /usr/bin/skype as root. Or alternatively you could use graphical editor (like gedit, kwrite, kate, etc.), but you have to start your editor as root user.
Works like a charm. Thanks again!
At first I couldn’t get my mic to work, but that was entirely PEBKAC. Calling echo at least works. Now to check whether pulseaudio will handle group calls while playing L4D2 on Wine …… :D

Hello JR,
Thank you for your kind reply.
Indeed the symlink solution is the best, I updated my setup.
Also, this is really not important, but the application icon (the green one) is not rendered correctly (it is not transparent and has some strange pixels), no ideea why.

Tried updating the gnome icoan cache but still the same.

Hi again Radu,

Updated my setup, thanx again for the tutorial!
I can confirm that in the rmp version the icon displays correctly.
All the best,

Yes, it’s true that we really learn and discover new things here! :)
You are very welcome! I hope that Skype team updates this static package images too, just like rpm version.

Very good tutorial, standard RPM package from skype didn’t want to behave.

Hi! I have fedora 16 X64. Can I install 64 bit libraries, I don’t want to install 686 libs. Is it possible?
Hi samlabs821,

Hi,could you please update this tuto as there is skype 4.0 available for linux yet.
Cheers.
Hi sgr,
I will update this guide soon and test it also with Fedora 17 :)
Hi JR,
Thanks it’s v.nice of you, plus you could also take into account writing a tuto how to get Google App Engine up and running on CENTOS etc.
http://www.labnol.org/internet/host-website-on-google-app-engine/18801/
..as you will see this guide above is for windows only so that would be great having stuff like this for linux users too.
Best Regards,
Big Fan.
Thanks, it works!

Never seen such a perfect tutorial.
Hi JR,
Nice tuto but I wonder if it will work for me. I still got the 2.2 beta version runing on f16 32bits. Do I have to remove it peviously, right? If I wanted to upgrade to the 4.0.0.8 Skype version?. If so, how can I do it to correctly from command line? Could you pls help me? I would appreciate it so much..
Txe
Hi Txe and thanks!
Yes, recommend you to remove your current installation, should be possible using the following commands:
Then install 4.0 with this guide. :)
Hi JR,
I’ve just tried your recomms and everything ran smoothly. Now Skype v4.0.0.8 works on my fed-16. I appreciate your help so much.
Excellent! :)
Thank you.
Thanks….
Hi JR,
Could yoy help me, pls?
Thanks.
Hi txe,
Looks like you have tar installed now. One thing is changed on Skype download and I updated this guide too, so download Skype with following command to get right filename:
And then follow this guide. Please let me know if you have any problems?
Hi, Thanks JR.
This time I could install it but I got issues. When start skype from cli I got this report:
“$ skype
/opt/skype/skype: error while loading shared libraries: libXss.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory”
any help?
Good to hear that you got Skype installed, did you installed all dependencies on step 1.2?
/opt/skype/skype: error while loading shared libraries: libXss.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory refers missing libXScrnSaver.i686 package.
Hi JR,
Yes I did as you guided above with not issues at sight.. Should I run that step enterely again?
Thanks for your soon reply..
Txe.
Yes try to run it again and if you some problems then please post yum install command output here?

Mike
Hi Mike,
Could you post output of following commands:
lspci lsusbIs your webcam working normally with some other application under Linux?
Thanks. Yes, there was a problem with the webcam. A friend of mine suggested that I update fedora and reinstall skype. Everything works now. Thanks.
Mike

Hi Satyajit,
Do you got any errors when you run yum update?
Do you use example nVidia drivers?
Could you test another (maybe older) kernel to boot?
Could you also post output of following command (to http://pastebin.com):
Hi JR,
I didnt got any error while updating.
I am able to boot through my old kernel (recovery mode).
Here is the output of commant

Hi Satyajit,
Okay thanks, what errors you get when you try to boot with latest 3.4.9-2.fc16.x86_64 kernel?
Hi JR,
I installed skype successfully on my fedora 16.
At step 1.2, i was getting error for few packages. So instead of updating whole system with yum update, i just updated the packages for which i was getting error and it did work. Thanks :)
Hi Satyajit,
Excellent! :)
thanks for this..
it works for me.
CentOS 6.0
Keep functioning ,great job!
I notice that the install includes a lot of i686 libs.
Will this work on a Fedora 17/64 system?
I’ve tried installing Skype with FedoraUtils (not yours) but Skype reports problems with audio / playback and I’m unable to make calls.
Thanks.
Just had to ‘reply to myself’.
All works A-Okay. i686 libraries are fine.
Thanks for the great guide. Worked without a hitch.
Hi Peter,
You are welcome and nice to hear that you got Skype working! And yes 32-bit libraries are needed on 64-bit systems because there is no 64-bit Skype available.
It took me a while to figure that out. Trust Microsoft to drag their feet updating Linux applications. I’m sure Skype is 64 bit on Windows 7.
You guide worked perfectly on two of my systems now.
Thanks very much.
Yes you are right there is Skype version for 64-bit Windows.
Nice to hear that this guide worked perfectly on your systems! :)
uh, I don’t know if it’s just me, but how do you edit the /usr/bin/skype file? I can access it, but I can’t save it..
Hi Jim,
You can use example nano or vi/vim editor to edit /usr/bin/skype as root. Or alternatively you could use graphical editor (like gedit, kwrite, kate, etc.), but you have to start your editor as root user.
Hello. Thanks a lot for the tutorial.
My Skype runs only when I type this in the terminal everytime.
#!/bin/sh
export SKYPE_HOME="/opt/skype"
$SKYPE_HOME/skype --resources=$SKYPE_HOME $*
I can’t find the icon in my applications. I am using Fedora 17. I am new to Linux and found the installations for almost everything here.
Could you please tell me how to uninstall this and do the installation freshly?
Hi Ankur,
Before uninstall / fresh install, could you post output of following commands:
This is what I got when I typed the commands.
[root@Ankur-Fedora ~]# ls -la /usr/bin/skype
-rwxr-xr-x. 1 root root 0 Oct 16 20:26 /usr/bin/skype
[root@Ankur-Fedora ~]# ls -la /usr/share/applications/skype.desktop
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 24 Oct 16 19:50 /usr/share/applications/skype.desktop -> /opt/skype/skype.desktop
[root@Ankur-Fedora ~]# ls -la /usr/share/icons/skype.png
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 36 Oct 16 19:50 /usr/share/icons/skype.png -> /opt/skype/icons/SkypeBlue_48x48.png
[root@Ankur-Fedora ~]# ls -la /usr/share/pixmaps/skype.png
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 36 Oct 16 19:50 /usr/share/pixmaps/skype.png -> /opt/skype/icons/SkypeBlue_48x48.png
Okay, looks good, could you also post output of following command:
Nothing happened :-o
Okay then add following to /usr/bin/skype file:
I added. Skype pops up. Skype comes on the bottom right. Also comes on the favorites panel. But does’t come in applications!
I tried reinstalling the whole thing again. This is the problem I am facing.

Hi Ankur,
As you can see from error messages you already have those links and
command won’t work, because there is not /user/ directory! It’s /usr/ as this guide says.
Works like a charm. Thanks again!
At first I couldn’t get my mic to work, but that was entirely PEBKAC. Calling echo at least works. Now to check whether pulseaudio will handle group calls while playing L4D2 on Wine …… :D
Outstanding Instructions.. worked perfectly without any issues on RHEL6
I cut and pasted your instructions and it worked flawelessly..
Love it!!!!!!!!
