Fedora 14 nVidia Drivers Install Guide (disable nouveau driver) - Comment Page: 1
Looking Fedora 22/21 nVidia Drivers Install Guide?
[inttf_post_ad1]
This is guide, howto install nVidia proprietary drivers on Fedora 14 and disable Nouveau driver. I write this guide about two weeks ago, but I Delayed the publication of this guide, because of pyxf86config bug, which cause following livna-config-display errors on boot:
Checking for module nvidia.ko: [ OK ]
Enabling the nvidia driver: Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/sbin/nvidia-config-display", line 28, in
import livnaConfigDisplay.ConfigDisplay

Are you saying to install both kmod and akmod?
Hi Sam,
I did not mean that the both should be installed. You should only install kmod-nvidia, kmod-nvidia-PAE or akmod. I updated 4. Install nVidia proprietary drivers part more clear. Thanks for your attention!
Works with BFG nVidia 7600GT! Thanks
Hi ESwint,
Nice to hear that you got it working!
Hi JR,
Thanks for your interesting post.
My lappy is asus ul80vt with hybrid vga (intel n nvidia). The prolem is i dont know how to diasable intel and upgrade nvidia. Once i installed nvidia driver from software update, it just boot in command line mode and cant get into the gnome desktop?
Any suggest, please?
Hi Thanh,
I just do some searching about this hybrid vga (Intel and nVidia) and it not looks very promising:
One thread from nVidia forums
Another thread from nvnews
Little bit more promising thread from Ubuntu forums
First I recommend, to remove nVidia driver and try to reboot your system.
The above did nothing more than what the RPMFusion instructions did for me. I’m still getting a black screen (the nvidia actually cuts output to the monitor…I get an “I’ll power down” message on the screen) as soon as I boot. If you’d like, feel free to contact me and I can feed you results of any checks you’d like me to run. For what it’s worth I’m running a Dell Inspiron 530 (nvidia 8300GS) and 2.6.35.6-48.fc14.i686.
Hi Peter,
So you get black screen immediately after the grub?
Or is your system booting normally until Xorg is starting?
Not good :
# yum --enablerepo=rpmfusion-nonfree-updates-testing install akmod-nvidia-173xx xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-173xx-libs.i686
Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit
Adding en_US to language list
Error getting repository data for rpmfusion-nonfree-updates-testing, repository not found
Hi Cata,
Did you added the RPMFusion repositories successfully with following command?
Please post output of following commands:
Got text problem after installing nvidia.
Text seems not to attractive in the eye. I mean, black text turns into something like lighter, gray text. Text becomes smaller.
Also, my monitor, with nouveau detected resolution 1366×768, but now after installing nvidia, it only detected 1280×720 resolution. Though, I got overlapping in 1366×768, in 1280×720, there’s no overlapping but the problem is, text are smaller and not very clear. Text seems like it’s printed with a dot matrix printer.
This same problem is common to all other distro I’ve tested. Same thing happen after installing nvidia 3d. Ubuntu, LinuxMint, and PCLinuxOS. And same here in Fedora.
Is there a way to fix this?
Btw, same monitor used to have 1360×768 under windows.
Hi KenWeiLL,
Many others, seems to have had a similar problems, example here and here.
One solution which could work. Try following lines to /etc/X11/xorg.conf file on Screen section:
Hi JR,
Thanks a lot. It worked.
I added the line:
Modeline “1360×765” 85.5 1360 1440 1552 1792 768 771 777 795 +hsync +vsync
on Section “Monitor” and added this line:
Option “MetaModes” “CRT: 1360×765”
on Section “Screen”.
With that, I get 1366×768 (which is weird since the setting is 1366×765) and it worked. Also, text are clear.
Hi again KenWeiLL,
Glad to hear that you got it working :)
Thanks also the description, how did you get it to work…if someone else has the same problem.
Hi, JR.
Sorry for bothering, do you know anything on how to make NVidia drivers working with nVidia Corporation G98M [Quadro NVS 160M] ?
I’ve try different installation mods, but till now – no chance :(
Thank you in advance.
Hi alphazo_id,
Could you post errors from /var/log/Xorg.0.log after booting?
Hi JR,
Xorg is what is dying. Ctrl-Alt-F2 brings me back to a text login prompt.
Hi again Peter,
Have you checked from /boot/grub/grub.conf that the rdblacklist=nouveau nouveau.modeset=0 found on the current kernel line?
Could you post errors from /var/log/Xorg.0.log after booting?
And could you post output of following commands:
This worked for me – however I had some X.org crashes when quitting X-Plane 9. Oddly, they ran just fine – but X bombed when you quit!
Removing the kmod and using the akmod instead seems to have solved the issue.
Thank you for the clear instructions!

Hi draeath,
Good to hear that you got the drivers to work, and thanks for the accurate information.
Hi draeath,
I’m glad to see that you can run X-plane on a F14 X86_64 with nvidia proprietary driver, because I just can’t. When I launch X-plane I only get its window run for a sec. and then:
$ /opt/X-Plane\ 9/X-Plane-i686
Looking for OpenAL here: libopenal.so
Looking for OpenAL here: libopenal.so.1

I can’t even tell if it is nvidia driver fault. Any idea on what is going wrong?
Thanks in advance
Hi,
I did exactly all the steps above, but my laptop, a Sony Vaio VPCCW13FB with an nVidia GeForce G210M, just hangs when trying to load Xorg and have to turn off the notebook by pressing the power button for 5 seconds.
How could I use the driver provided by nVidia (. Run)?
Regards,
Hi Jeff,
First of all, this is guide, howto install and use driver provided by nVidia and packaged by RPMFusion. So yes you could install driver straight using nVidia’s .run installer, but using YUM is much more elegant way to do it, because you could update your drivers using package management system and you get new build after kernel update or could use akmod system which build nVidia drivers automatically for current kernel. So using nVidia’s .run installer is more complicated way to install nVidia drivers because you have to do all configuration by hand and you have to do all maintenance manually.
So, I think it is better to try to solve this problem and get these RPMFusion nVidia drivers to work.
Okey some basic information first…
Have you checked from /boot/grub/grub.conf that the rdblacklist=nouveau nouveau.modeset=0 found on the current kernel line?
You could change to console by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F2. Log in and check following…
Please post errors from /var/log/Xorg.0.log after booting.
And post output of following commands:
Have you checked from /boot/grub/grub.conf that the rdblacklist=nouveau nouveau.modeset=0 found on the current kernel line?
Could you post errors from /var/log/Xorg.0.log after booting?
And could you post output of following commands:
lsmod | grep nvidia
## And ##
lsmod |grep nouveau
There is one little fragment that looks suspicious at the end:
Hi Peter,
Everything looks good so far.
You could check errors and warnings from /var/log/Xorg.0.log file using grep, like:
Are there any?
And then you could post /etc/X11/xorg.conf file content here.
@Cata: I had the same problem.
Instead of:
rpm -Uvh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-stable.noarch.rpm
do the following:
rpm -Uvh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm
and after
rpm -Uvh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-stable.noarch.rpm
It seems that the free repo was already installed und rpm breaks the import of the second non-free repo.

Hi Jr,
I’ve decide to go back to F12 for now. In F12 the nvidia drivers just install and work like they’re supposed to.
I’d be more than happy to create a partition and set it aside for F14 testing, but it’s been too long since I’ve had to do that, so I don’t remember how anymore. ;)
Peter
Hi Peter,
The easiest way is use a program like GParted.
Install with following command:
And resize some partition and then install Fedora 14 to empty space…
Can u please explain how to install audio drivers in fedora 14?
Hi Balamurugan,
Did the sounds work before you installed the nVidia driver?
