Hi jules,
Did you tried to run Eclipse as root user or normal user?
How can I uninstall Eclipse if I use this method for installation?
Hi Mriyam,
You could remove Eclipse using following commands:
This doesn’t remove your data from home directory, just this guide Eclipse installation.
Awesome! Very nice that you include on how to do the [Desktop Entry] etc.! Thank you! :)
there is a “nano ~” missing in point 7 before “/usr/share/appl….”
It doesn’t work without it.
Hello Vasile,
You can use any editor (nano, pico, vim/vim, joe etc.), that’s why there is only mention, “Create following file, with our favourite editor”.
You’re right, sorry!
Thank You !
yo lo instale con $ yum install eclipse. !!!!!!
Hi carlos,
Yes, Eclipse Mars 4.5 is available if you have Fedora 22/23/24.
And better command is:
This is manual method and works EL 5/6/7 and older Fedoras. And you can select your Eclipse version from http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/
Hi,
I did try using Eclipse Installer and it seems good.
https://www.eclipse.org/downloads/
After that I have applied [ 7. Create Gnome desktop launcher ] to create desktop icon.
thank you for this – installed Eclipse Mars without incident in my Fedora 23 32-bit

Hi kunal,
Could post output of following command:
And full file name what you downloaded?
Running Install Eclipse Mars 4.5 on RHEL 5.11
I get the following error message after having follow your steps.
configure: error: Package requirements (glib-2.0 >= 2.28.0 atk >= 1.30 pango >= 1.20 cairo >= 1.10.0 cairo-gobject >= 1.10.0 gdk-pixbuf-2.0 >= 2.22.0) were not met:

Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.
Alternatively, you may set the environment variables BASE_DEPENDENCIES_CFLAGS
and BASE_DEPENDENCIES_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.
See the pkg-config man page for more details.
Do you have a screen shot of it working on RHEL 5.11 if so could you please reference your steps so that I can follow them. Thanks.
Hi Daniel,
This is actually my mistake. Latest working version (on CentOS/RHEL 5.11) is Eclipse Luna (4.4.2) http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/packages/release/Luna/SR2
Simply Download your package and run following commands (I assume that you have installed Mars as described):
Then you can also modify your launcher “Comment” row.
This worked just fine for me! Thanks
Hello JR,
I have followed this tutorial, but installed Neon instead (the most recent version).
With Neon what you extract is the installer, not the app. Presently I can only run Eclipse from command line using sudo. Trying to launch Eclipse by clicking on the icon fails with “Eclipse executable launcher was unable to locate its companion shared library”.
Trying the same from CL:
[[email protected] ~]$ eclipse
/root/.p2/pool/plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher.gtk.linux.x86_64_1.1.400.v20160518-1444: cannot open shared object file: Permission denied
Also creating any project fails with the message: ‘”Cannot read the java.home” property – unable detect the JVM that Eclipse is running on.’ But I have JAVA_HOME set and I showed the path to jdk via Window->Preferences->JDKs…
Any advise would be greatly appreciated :-) But if you think it is unreparable, please tell me how to uninstall it. I will try Mars then.
Thank you,
Vasile
Could anyone help me with point 6!
