Install Skype 8.69 on Fedora 34/33, CentOS/RHEL/SL 8.3/7.8 - Comment Page: 4
This is guide, howto install Skype 8.69 on Fedora 34/33/32/31 on CentOS/Red Hat (RHEL)/Scientific Linux (SL) 8.3/7.8. This is actually easy process, I updated this guide and use Skype own RPM package, because it's currently only way the install Skype. Skype 4.3 and older versions are outdated after July 1. 2017.

I notice that the install includes a lot of i686 libs.
Will this work on a Fedora 17/64 system?
I’ve tried installing Skype with FedoraUtils (not yours) but Skype reports problems with audio / playback and I’m unable to make calls.

You are welcome and nice to hear that you got Skype working! And yes 32-bit libraries are needed on 64-bit systems because there is no 64-bit Skype available.
It took me a while to figure that out. Trust Microsoft to drag their feet updating Linux applications. I’m sure Skype is 64 bit on Windows 7.

uh, I don’t know if it’s just me, but how do you edit the /usr/bin/skype file? I can access it, but I can’t save it..

You can use example nano or vi/vim editor to edit /usr/bin/skype as root. Or alternatively you could use graphical editor (like gedit, kwrite, kate, etc.), but you have to start your editor as root user.

I can’t find the icon in my applications. I am using Fedora 17. I am new to Linux and found the installations for almost everything here.

I added. Skype pops up. Skype comes on the bottom right. Also comes on the favorites panel. But does’t come in applications!
I tried reinstalling the whole thing again. This is the problem I am facing.

As you can see from error messages you already have those links and
command won’t work, because there is not /user/ directory! It’s /usr/ as this guide says.
I am on Fedora 19. On entering the following command “cat /usr/bin/skype” I get the contents of usr/bin/skype file. But I can’t find skype in my applications but skype works from terminal. Could you please help?

At first I couldn’t get my mic to work, but that was entirely PEBKAC. Calling echo at least works. Now to check whether pulseaudio will handle group calls while playing L4D2 on Wine …… :D

The tutorial looks good but I’m dead at the first command. I didn’t see that anyone else was having this problem. Please advise.
I bumped against the same challenge, but I downloaded the Dynamic version of Skype. And then used the steps described in the tutorial. But then again I bumped at adding the lines to /usr/bin/skype because it is a binary file. I’m using CENTOS i386.

I updated this tutorial, because of latest Skype update. I assume that you are using CentOS 6.3, Red Hat (RHEL) 6.3 or Scientific Linux (SL) 6.3? Currently Skype 4.1 won’t work on CentOS, RHEL or SL. You have to use older version Skype 4.0 instead, because Skype 4.1 requires Qt 4.7 and Enterprise Linux 6 have only 4.6.

I’ve used this tutorial to install skype on CentOS 5 server( with X window System ).
I’m stuck at adding lines to /usr/bin/skype because it is a binary file.
I tried starting skype without the modification and I get the error (which I can understand):
Segmentation fault
How can we get skype working on this system?

I am trying to install skype 4.1
Currently already have 4.0 installed.
Sorry, but Skype 4.1 won’t work on CentOS/Red Hat (RHEL) 6, because Skype 4.1 requires Qt 4.7 and Enterprise Linux 6 have only 4.6.
Skype 4.0 works flawlessly on Enterprise Linux 6 (RHEL/CentOS/SL), so that’s why this guide uses Skype 4.0 for EL6.

In theory, you can install newer Qt on EL 6 (example compiling from sources), but it’s definitely not worth the effort. :)

The current version of Skype 4.1 (and 4.0) won’t work on CentOS 5. You can download an older, static version of Skype (2.1) which should work on CentOS 5 from here.

You need hash before at the beginning of first line:
[[email protected] ~]# skype
/usr/bin/skype: line 5: â€/opt/skypeâ€/skype: No such file or directory
Check your quotation marks, looks like you have some “styled” quotation marks and your SKYPE_HOME is â€/opt/skype†and not /opt/skype which it should be. So write quotation marks again manually, also copying from real code block from here should remove styling if you use example nano, vi etc, this also depends on your browser.

I just checked this guide on clean installed Fedora 17 with all latest updates and there is /usr/lib/libtiff.so.3.9.7 link (created automatically) and Skype runs normally without doing this /usr/lib/libtiff.so.4 link.
I try to check this in more detail, but some reason I can’t reproduce your error, even if libtiff.so.4 link doesn’t exists.
I am new to Linux, and I do not know why when I try to do step 1.6, when adding the contents to text editor, it won’t save because I apparently don’t have permissions to save the file.
