Install Skype 8.69 on Fedora 34/33, CentOS/RHEL/SL 8.3/7.8 - Comment Page: 6
This is guide, howto install Skype 8.69 on Fedora 34/33/32/31 on CentOS/Red Hat (RHEL)/Scientific Linux (SL) 8.3/7.8. This is actually easy process, I updated this guide and use Skype own RPM package, because it's currently only way the install Skype. Skype 4.3 and older versions are outdated after July 1. 2017.

1. Install Skype 8.69 on Fedora...
I keep getting this error: /opt/skype/skype: error while loading shared libraries: /lib/libXss.so.1: file too short
I do yum provides “” and find that I already have it installed. Uninstalling and reinstalling the X screen saver library does not help either. I looked at the file in the library and it is empty. What is odd about this to me is that I have already installed skype successfully on Fedora 18… dunno what is happening here.

I also think I may have made a mistake, because when I would reinstall the package that provided the needed library file, another missing one would emerge. Soon it was leading me down a rabbit hole of library roullette. This is a brand new install, and I would be amenable to reinstalling the OS just to get thing back to normal, if necessary.

I tested this guide on clean installed Fedora 18 and it works just like before with libXScrnSaver-1.2.2-2 so it’s hard to say why you get this error. But if you can do clean install, then it could be easiest way to resolve this strange library problem.

You could try using –skip-broken to work around the problem

Looks like you are missing whole /opt/skype directory content try installation again from step 1.4.
I’m mess :D I did it from 1.4 and now I get:

I’ve tried what you said to Rahul (if I’m not wrong) but it’s for Fedora 14, and I’m using Fedora 17…

This same info found also on step 1.2.
My video displaying did not work (64 bit, compiz), and this fixed it:
add to the bash script /usr/bin/skype

Error: Multilib version problems found. This often means that the root
cause is something else and multilib version checking is just
pointing out that there is a problem. Eg.:
1. You have an upgrade for qtwebkit which is missing some
dependency that another package requires. Yum is trying to
solve this by installing an older version of qtwebkit of the
different architecture. If you exclude the bad architecture
yum will tell you what the root cause is (which package
requires what). You can try redoing the upgrade with
–exclude qtwebkit.otherarch … this should give you an error
message showing the root cause of the problem.
2. You have multiple architectures of qtwebkit installed, but
yum can only see an upgrade for one of those arcitectures.
If you don’t want/need both architectures anymore then you
can remove the one with the missing update and everything
will work.
3. You have duplicate versions of qtwebkit installed already.
You can use “yum check” to get yum show these errors.
…you can also use –setopt=protected_multilib=false to remove
this checking, however this is almost never the correct thing to
do as something else is very likely to go wrong (often causing
much more problems).
