This is guide, howto upgrade Fedora 17 to Fedora 18 (Spherical Cow) using YUM. Old official Preupgrade method is not available anymore on Fedora 18/17, it's replaced by new FedUp method, which is official method to upgrade Fedora 17 to Fedora 18 or rawhide. • Hi Freddy,

Looks like that Dropbox doesn’t have yet Fedora 18 repos, but I think that the Fedora 17 work normally, if you change manually Dropbox repo file.

Backup repo file and change following line:

        ## To ##

        Is it working then?

    1. PLZ…..This way is not official support…Only way is using FedUp!

      • Hi Christopher,

Thanks, removed “official” mention and I will soon checkout FedUp and update this guide to use FedUp or write totally new guide. Thanks!

    2. I have nVidia card and had installed akmod on Fedora 17. I upgraded using fedup (before you published this post) and now Fedora 18 freezes at login screen (no screen appears).

I can use Ctrl+F2 to drop to terminal at the point where it “freezes”. I tried `startx` but it doesn’t work due to some issues with nVidia drivers. This has happened before (I think F16 to F17), but I was able to reinstall the propriety nvidia drivers and sort out the issue. But even the propriety drivers won’t install for some reason (requires nouveau disabled).

      • Hi lilpirate,

Are you using akmod-nvidia or kmod-nvidia?

Could you post output of following commands:

        uname -a
        rpm -qa kernel\* \*nvidia\*
    3. Hey if i upgrade will it still bring the error for updating?
When i first installed fedora 18 from the DVD, i had problems installing updates

      • Hi Mwimbi Jean,

Hard to say, because I don’t know what errors you had? Normally updates should install just fine without any problems.

    4. i have trouble installing stuff

      • Hi MrPutter67,

Could you tell more specific what kind of trouble you have?

    5. I have same problem. After upgrading fc17 to fc18 and after load login screen i cant move mouse or enter to my user account.plz help me…

      • Hi Mohammad Abedi,

Do you use any external repositories or any proprietary drivers, like nVidia graphics card driver?

    6. I lost the use of my mousepad. Investigating…

      • [[email protected] ~]$ xinput –list-props “SynPS/2 Synaptics Touchpad”
unable to find device SynPS/2 Synaptics Touchpad
        [[email protected] ~]$ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf
        Section “InputClass”
        Identifier “touchpad catchall”
        Driver “synaptics”
        MatchIsTouchpad “on”
        MatchDevicePath “/dev/input/event*”

Which is odd. It says it is on but it is not being utilized.

I then executed: cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log and saw this:

        [ 18.623] (II) config/udev: Adding input device SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad (/dev/input/event5)
[ 18.623] (**) SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: Applying InputClass “evdev touchpad catchall”

        [ 18.624] compiled for 1.12.4, module version = 1.6.3
        [ 18.624] Module class: X.Org XInput Driver
        [ 18.624] ABI class: X.Org XInput driver, version 16.0
        [ 18.624] (EE) module ABI major version (16) doesn’t match the server’s version (18)
        [ 18.624] (II) UnloadModule: “synaptics”
        [ 18.624] (II) Unloading synaptics

        Continuing investigation…

        • Hi Caolan Dix,
