    1. The patched version (Download inttf NVIDIA patcher and patch NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-390.138 for Kernel 5.9+) works perfectly on kernel 5.9.9-200.fc33.x86_64.

    6. I followed this entire guide for the NVIDIA 390.138 patched 5.9 kernel through the end.
      As I have a NVIDIA Geforce GT 630M

      is it normal that it keeps hanging on “started gnome display manager”..?

      • This might be totally normal situation, if you have laptop with NVIDIA Optimus device. Could you post output of following command:

        lspci |grep -E "VGA|3D"
        

        You can find more information from before installation step 1.2 NVIDIA Optimus Technology.

        NVIDIA own documentation says:
        The driver may be installed normally on Optimus systems, but the NVIDIA X driver and the NVIDIA OpenGL driver may not be able to display to the laptop’s internal display panel unless a means to connect the panel to the NVIDIA GPU (for example, a hardware multiplexer, or “mux”, often controllable by a BIOS setting) is available. On systems without a mux, the NVIDIA GPU can still be useful for offscreen rendering, PRIME render offload, running CUDA applications, and other uses that don’t require driving a display.

        So what this means, if you can’t control NVIDIA Optimus from UEFI/BIOS then you can install NVIDIA drivers and everything works, except your laptop display panel.

      • Unfortunately, it’s the same here with NVIDIA 390.138 patched 5.9 kernel although I have the option in the BIOS to switch between Intel/Discreet/Optimus.

        Mine is NVIDIA QUADRO NVS K2000M.

        It’s been long time since I haven’t been back to Linux because of such issues and alas not much has changed.

        For now I’ll stick with the nouveau driver.

        Anyway, thanks for the guide. It was very easy to follow.

      I am running Fedora 33 with kernel 5.9.11-200.fc33.x86_64.
      I followed the guide and installed 340.xx driver. It was successful. I am able to login to the desktop.
      But when I ran mplayer to play video, I got the following error:

      mplayer: /lib64/libOpenCL.so.1: no version information available (required by /lib64/libavutil.so.56)
      mplayer: /lib64/libOpenCL.so.1: no version information available (required by /lib64/libavutil.so.56)
      mplayer: symbol lookup error: /lib64/libavutil.so.56: undefined symbol: clGetExtensionFunctionAddressForPlatform, version OPENCL_1.2

      Does anyone know how to fix it?

        First nice to hear that you got drivers installed!

        Is this problem only with DVD’s? Or any video with mplayer?

        I just tested some video from Internet using mplayer + NVIDIA 340.xx drivers and it’s working normally. I don’t currently have any DVD player or DVD to test.

      The problem was with any video. I also had problem with vlc as well.
      When I ran clinfo, I got this msg at the end:
      NOTE: your OpenCL library only supports OpenCL 1.1,
      but some installed platforms support OpenCL 1.2.
      Programs using 1.2 features may crash
      or behave unexpectedly

      I fixed it by replacing libOpenCL.so.1.0.0 in /usr/lib64.

      -rwxr-xr-x. 1 root root 137600 Dec 4 22:02 /lib64/libOpenCL.so.1.0.0*
      -rwxr-xr-x. 1 root root 21712 Dec 4 21:54 /lib64/libOpenCL.so.1.0.0_from_Installer*

      The smaller one is from the installer after I ran the patched command.
      The big one is from 5.8 kernel+Nvidia 340 diver from RPMFUSION. I don’t know which rpm this bigger lib file is from.

      With this bigger libOpenCL, I have no problem with mplayer and vlc. The output of clinfo now ended with:
      NOTE: your OpenCL library declares to support OpenCL 3.0,
      but it seems to support up to OpenCL 2.2 only.

      I hope it continues to work when the next kernel update arrives.

        Thanks! This is actually interesting. I use here original NVIDIA 340xx libOpenCL.so.1.0.0. Have to check that what version RPMFusion use and maybe pack it with patched 340xx version.

          That bigger libOpenCL.so.1.0.0 comes from this package: ocl-icd-2.2.13-1.fc33.x86_64
          from fedora, not from RPM Fusion.
