    2. If you are a Linux type of user, then try to NOT purchase a PC with NVIDIA video.

      Linux AMD drivers are in the kernel tree, and excellent.

      Intel, not as good, however also part of the kernel.

      • You are totally right that AMD and Intel have better open source support on Linux Kernel.

        I have used NVIDIA products with Linux since 2006 and have to say that it needs bit work, but still everything works without problems. Most problematic are old NVIDIA cards without NVIDIA support.

      OMG! It worked :-D … I was so sure this would blow up in my face, hehe.

      I was suffering a nouveau bug preventing Android Studios emulator from working. So I finally decided to switch to Nvidias driver.

      I can’t thank you enough!

      In the middle of installation error ocured: Yor kernel headers for kernel 5.8.15-301.fc33.x86_64 cannot be found at /lib/modules5.8.15…/build or /source

      So I had to install:

      • Hi Aleksey,

        You should have latest kernel installed and running if you run commands on step 2.4 currently latest kernel version is 5.10.13. Then also right kernel devel package is installed with install command on step 2.5. If you want run old kernel some reason, then yes, you have to install right kernel packages.

      Thanks for your great guides. I have been referencing them for about a decade, Fedora 15/16.

    9. 2.6.2 Edit /etc/sysconfig/grub ==> 2.6.2 Edit /etc/default/grub

      change to file ~!!

      Reply
      • Do you have some reason why I should change it?

        It is exactly the same file:

        ls -la /etc/sysconfig/grub
        lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root 15 Aug 31 12:12 /etc/sysconfig/grub -> ../default/grub

        I’ve been using Fedora since Fedora Core 1 and Red Hat before that, so I can tell you that the more RHEL/Fedora/CentOS/SLES way is use /etc/sysconfig instead of /etc/default (which is Debian/Ubuntu way).

        One earlier discussion about /etc/sysconfig vs /etc/default.

        You can read Fedora developers discussion about /etc/sysconfig vs /etc/default from:

      I succeded with the installation.

      But everytime when I upgrade my kernel it doesn’t work anymore. Is there a trick what I can do to get the driver working without uninstall it and than install it again?

      • Hello Philipp B,

        Nice to hear that you got it working.

        This might be dkms problem, could you post output of following command:

        dkms status

    11. Thanks for the how-to on installing NVIDIA Drivers. It all went swimmingly until I ran the Nvidia installer. (Logged in as root then I had it cd / and then cd down to its location.) Began to initialise but detected the Nouveau driver was still there and advised to blacklist it after tying to do it itself and failing. I reissued the disable nouveau mod probe again as root used and rerun installer. This time it found the nouveau driver active again and inferred that even though there were grub files to disable it, the boot loader had still loaded it afterward for some reason. Exited with leaving me with the problem. I’m not an experience Linux programmer but this issue seems to pop up regularly with other driver installs. It seems that 3rd party driver providers do not know what developer dependencies are need to compile, nor how to stop the kernel from restarting black listed drivers. It even seems if you delete them, it will just download them. Ready to give up on driver installation and that means giving up on Linux unfortunately.

    12. Take 2 – Please bypass previous comment. After reissuing commands to remove nouveau and rebooting, the install run until it failed to run dkms build and advised it could not find kernel headers. I tried installing them using same command as Aleksey 8 Feb comment, def install kernel…fc333.68_64. Unfortunately also this failed asking for a missing destination operand. I don’t know where that would be and assume this would /lib/modules/5.8.15…/build or /lib/modules/5.15…/source where the installer expected to find them. Please overlook my Linux naivety and help with the correct command to install the headers. It seems there is no absolute right place. Just put them where they will be found. Had similar problems with other drivers and found that /build is a broken symbolic pointer, not a directory. Is this usual and is it a problem. Will fudge it in the interim.
