      • Hi Ahmed,

Can’t see your screenshot, it’s only path on your computer. Could you tell me little bit more about your system? What nVidia card you use, what monitor and how they are connected?

    8. This is an EXCELLENT tutorial, I finally managed to have my laptop Acer Nitro to work properly!!

I just installed Fedora 28 64-bit with GNOME Version 3.28.2

The only caveat I had to do was to run the driver using the –no-drm parameter.

      My output:

    9. After much trying of things that didn’t work, I tried your new instructions and they appeared to have worked nicely:

Falcon Talon with i9 and Nvidia Titan Xp running Fedora 28

      [email protected] Nvidia]$ uname -a
      Linux nyx 4.17.19-200.fc28.x86_64 #1 SMP Fri Aug 24 15:47:41 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

      [[email protected] Nvidia]$ lspci |grep -E “VGA|3D”
65:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GP102 [TITAN Xp] (rev a1)
      [[email protected] Nvidia]$

      [[email protected] Nvidia]$ nvidia-installer -v |grep version
nvidia-installer: version 390.87 ([email protected]) Tue Aug 21 17:33:51 PDT
      [[email protected] Nvidia]$

So, at this point I’m happy.

BUT, I cannot get the cuda toolkit to install and work. I have tried both the Fedora package version and the .run file version. The dnf version cannot find any Nvidia drivers and the .run version says it’s not compatible with the drivers.

Do you have any advice on installing the cuda toolkit? I can provide more specific error messages if that would help.

      Thanks for a great post.

    10. Hi,

After rebooting to runlevel 3 (step 2.7), the linux boot process hangs arbitrarily. The last few boot messages were something about found USB and ata devices, then some messages about wanting to use the VGA port. Mashing the keyboard did not do anything.

I am running Fedora 28, a Nvidia P600 on a Gigabyte GA-6LXSV (note this has a on-board VGA via the BMC).

I had a feeling that the video was not being passed properly during boot and that the system was waiting for the now-nonexistent video driver.

To fix this, I appended “nomodeset” parameter in step 2.6.2, and it booted into runlevel 3!

    11. Even after all the steps carried out before going text mode, the installer tells me nouveau is still active and it cannot install. In Linux mint you just tick a box and all is done. I guess I’ll need to stick to that, I am obviously too impatient for Fedora.

      • Hi Erik,

No it shouldn’t be. So maybe some step failed? All 2.6 steps are critical.

    13. Hello JR,

I have GTX 1060 and UEFI Fedora 28 for my desktop PC. I followed the steps until 2.7 (Reboot to runlevel3). However, after the reboot I cannot see my console login. My monitor shows blacksreen wihtout any cursor. PRessing alt+ctrl+Fx doesn’t bring me to any console.

I’ve tried four times, and it shows the same result that I’m stuck at the step 2.7 after reboot.

Do you have any solution? or maybe there is a bug?
      Thanks.

      • Hi Zogi,

Try following append also nomodeset on step. 2.6.2, then Update grub2 conf (step. 2.6.3) and then Generate initramfs again (step 2.6.5).

Then try to reboot your system runlevel 3.

        • Hi JR,

many many thanks for the reply and the suggestion to append`nomodeset`. It helped me to install the driver and I can stick to use Fedora instead of Manjaro. But why don’t you update your step 2.6.2 since the video mode setting has been moved to the kernel?

These are the outputs of the three commands on my desktop:

          nvidia-installer: version 390.87 ([email protected])

          Linux localhost.localdomain 4.18.5-200.fc28.x86_64 #1 SMP Tue Sep 4 15:56:14 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I would like to appreciate your help by sending a donation. Could you send me a link or your paypal to my email?

          Cheers and again many thanks,
          Zogi

P.S.: I’m curious, why are you interested in these three outputs?

          Reply
          • Hi Zogi,

You’re welcome. Reason why I don’t update step 2.6.2 because normally nomodeset kernel parameter is not needed. Only cases when you really need it is when your card + cable + monitor combo won’t work as it should work. Normal operation is that the KMS works and you don’t get black screen. I maybe update this guide and add this to FAQ page.

I can send my paypal info to your email, if you want to donate.

These three outputs are some kind of donation in itself. These tell the nVidia driver version, the Fedora OS and kernel version and the nVidia card specs. It’s nice to know which combinations are working and what is not.

            • Hello JR,

now I’m trying to install the CUDA toolkit on Fedora 28. As we can see on the official CUDA website, the CUDA 9.2 installation is supported only for Fedora 27 with kernel 4.15.x and GCC 7.3.1.

Do you have any hint or installation steps for CUDA (9.1 or 9.2) in Fedora 28?

I followed the steps in this blog https://davidwpearson.wordpress.com/2018/07/11/installing-cuda-9-1-on-fedora-28-taking-the-easy-way-out/ to install the cuda packages (sudo dnf install cuda nvidia-driver-cuda cuda-devel cuda-samples cuda-gcc cuda-gcc-c++) with combination of your driver installation steps. However, after running the devicequery program, it returns “no CUDA-capable device is detected”. It means the installed CUDA toolkit cannot detect my graphic card. Do you have any idea?

              Thank you in advance

              • Hi Zogi,

First thank you for your donation!

I just tested official NVIDIA CUDA 9.2 (with and without patch 1) installer on Fedora 28 with latest kernel 4.18.7-200.fc28.x86_64, latest nVidia drivers 396.54 and gcc 8.1.1. It’s working, but need few extra steps on install. I just decide to write separate guide, how to install CUDA on Fedora 28/27.
